All three use heat to relax the body, but they feel and work very differently.
Sauna
A sauna uses dry heat, typically very hot with low humidity. You sweat quickly, and many people use it after training. There is no cleansing ritual; it is about heat alone.
Steam room
A steam room is cooler than a sauna but close to fully humid. The moist air feels gentler on the lungs and helps open the pores.
Hammam
A hammam, or Moroccan bath, uses warm, humid heat as the first step of a full cleansing ritual. After the skin softens, black soap is applied and a kessa glove is used to exfoliate the whole body, followed by a rinse. It is the only one of the three that leaves your skin noticeably smoother.
Which should you choose?
- Sauna for a quick, intense sweat
- Steam room for gentle warmth and open pores
- Hammam for a deep cleanse, smoother skin and a true ritual
